Farmers’ Almanac Releases 2022/2023 Winter Predictions

One of the most trusted sources for seasonal weather predictions, The Farmers’ Almanac, has released its 2022/2023 winter weather forecast amid growing concern over the rising cost of  heating oil. The Farmers’ Almanac’s stated goal is to help people plan ahead and to predict the weather accurately through a set of mathematical and astronomical rules.

“Every year since 1818, we consult our time-tested weather formula to offer you an extended weather forecast not only for the winter ahead but the entire year. Our goal is to help you plan ahead.” The editors note that they have accurately published long-range weather forecasts since 1818.

While Winter officially starts on December 21, 2023, meteorological winter starts on December 1. The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a cold, stormy December with blizzard conditions blowing snow into areas over the North Central States, New England, and even areas of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

The Pacific Northwest is also predicted to have an unusually snowy and wet winter due to the possible El Nino that could move the subtropical jet stream into California equating to lots of snow and rain across the entire Southwest.

Unseasonably cold weather is also forecasted for Texas in January and February, with a possible monster winter storm in mid-January.

Not everyone will be affected by the below-average temperatures. The Southeast and Florida are forecasted to see average temperatures with a “wetter-than-normal winter.”

While these are general weather forecasts, the Farmers’ Almanac does drill down some specific calendar dates to keep an eye out for winter weather advisories.

• For the Pacific Coast and Eastern States, the second week of January will be snowy, stormy, and wet.
• For the South Central States there will be lots of cold temperatures and some storms during the middle of January.
• The western United States encoding the mountains on the Pacific Coast will encounter heavy blanketing mountain snow.
• The Northeast and New England states will go through an East Coast storm that will bring snowfall, cold, rain, and frigid temperatures during the second week of February.
